Journey Inwards, by Sinead Sugrue

The development of Martinstown Holistic Centre has been a living embodiment of the philosophy that Sinead Sugrue, founder and owner, teaches in her workshops and courses. The laws of the universe – attraction, abundance and non-attachment informed the manner in which the centre has developed. This was not through any conscious planning, but evolved in this way, mirroring Sinead’s spiritual journey and development.

Sinead’s career background has been very academic and corporate. While she tried to develop the holistic centre using skills learned in that environment, it just didn’t work. Her innate abilities in the area of spirituality, together with her awareness of her mission, and the self-discipline to embody that mission, led her to a place where she knew that she had to approach the development of the centre in a very different way. As she began to trust her heart and intuition, acknowledge confusion and fear without attachment, things began to fall into place and the centre has grown into a place of powerful self-healing and learning.

Sinead will say that the learning for her has been in being aware, conscious and present to the experience of being human, knowing that one has an eternal connection to a source of divine energy within ourselves, and that to live our human existence fruitfully and positively, we just need to acknowledge and embrace our enormous potential – most of which most of us don’t use.
As adults, we need to shed the conditioning we’ve absorbed all our lives – that the rational, analytical, sequential, logical way is the best way; to the neglect of our greatest talents, ideas, inspiration and the poverty and stunting of our own growth.
The harmony of imagination and action, of creativity and skills/knowledge, of conscious and sub-conscious, of human and being is vital to progress in a society where many old systems are crumbling.

Many people, faced with redundancy, are now exploring avenues they might never have considered if their security net hadn’t been taken away. They are re-connecting with a journey of self-discovery that they might themselves have been sceptical about a few years ago.
Change is all around us, confusion and uncertainty part of everyone’s life. We can’t look outside ourselves for answers, because the old certainties are dissolving.
So let us journey inwards….

Dreams - A Mystical Journey, by Gerry Dempsey

Whenever the subject of dreams comes up in conversation, most people will say either they don’t dream at all or they have one particular recurring dream or they had this weird and wonderful dream the other night but can’t remember what it was. Most people really don’t pay much attention to them at all, when in fact they contain messages.

Our ancestors, the indigenous peoples of Earth, regarded dreams as an alternate reality which was very real indeed for them. The dream state was a place where the spirit of the person met with great ancestral spirits of the earth, sky and beyond, to receive guidance, foretelling upcoming events and to engage in active communication with spirits. Fast forward to the modern day, the development Psychotherapy has introduced to the western mind, concepts such as the archetypes (images, behaviour and thought patterns), the shadow self , the collective consciousness etc., the development of which has been greatly enhanced by the study of dream states of individuals providing a window into the consciousness and sub consciousness of the individual. A key step in any healing process.
Given the healing and spiritual value of dreams it is possible to work with dreams so as to understand the active but hidden parts within a person as an aid to removing emotional blocks and subconscious patterns with that of the ancestral, which looks to dreams for guidance, for foretelling for healing, for connecting with spirits on an alternate level of awareness?

The approach to dream work that I have practiced over the past number of years tells me that this is very much the case.
Dreams occur in an altered state of awareness, not a material reality, but a reality of experience where our higher selves, engages different faculties to enable a type of workshop to be played out in a safe way without the constraints of physical reality. What comes into play is a kind of drama rich in symbols and meaning where our higher consciousness shows us what it is we need to do or look at within ourselves so we can progress to living our lives from our true selves – not the false self (ego). To do this strange events occur within our dreams, characters appear, unusual activities happen with bizarre reactions and outcomes.
Using fundamental rules with an understanding of the meaning of the symbology and feeling states, dreams can be interpreted on multiple levels to show the negative imprints of past events and relationships hidden in our sub consciousness mind that affect how we live our life today. They can show potential health issues linked to unhealed emotions / fears etc.

Dreams can show us our potential, the gifts we possess and can develop and they can provide us with a foretelling which we can choose to heed so as to engage in right action in our lives. All in all a powerful way to learn more about ourselves and if coupled with a healing program can provide a profound mystical insight into a person’s healing journey.

Gerry Dempsey is planning to hold workshops on how to interpret your dreams at the Martinstown Holistic Centre. If you are interested in knowing more about this please contact the centre on 045 442153.

Children and Spirituality, by Blath Tonra

Are you drawn to matters pertaining to spirituality? Do you avail of courses to deepen your understanding and your practice of inner wisdom and healing? Does the notion of the supportive and loving energy of the universe resonate with you?
If your answer is yes, then do you, like me, wonder how should we engage with and educate our children in the same way that we are exploring for ourselves? The children are actually much more in tune with this perspective than we are, but lose their familiarity and confidence with it as they grow and are conditioned by the society we live in.

The education system in Ireland and elsewhere - no matter how happy we are with our child’s school – places huge emphasis and value on left brain skills such as logic, reason, language skills, rationality, analysis and so on. Of course most schools give due emphasis to the arts and creativity too, but the demands of society and the marketplace dictate the over-valuing of these useful but incomplete set of attributes and skills.

The right hemisphere of the brain is the seat of creativity, imagination, intuition, body awareness and the subconscious mind. If the exercising of this part of our brains – and our children’s brains – is neglected, it becomes rusty, we don’t feel trust or comfortable with it. Most importantly, we are failing to use at least half of our potential for intelligence, self-expression and self-realisation.

Many adults are now seeking meditative and body awareness practices, to re-connect with the richness of their inner selves, and combining what they discover with their left-brain skills to ground down or externalise their true potential. But hey – shouldn’t we be doing this with our children? Why let them lose it and go through the pain and struggle of re-engaging with it in thirty years time? The human race and the planet are evolving, and we need to support this generation of children to take their place in what is to come.

It is so clear to me that we should be teaching our children to meditate, to observe their breath, their bodies, their thoughts; to speak to them about their dreams, their imaginings, their sensing of things; to teach them about quantum physics in simple language – all matter is energy, seen and unseen, vibrating at different speeds; to engage with the natural world; to create opportunities for them to be still and to listen to their inner selves. The society we live in affords them very little opportunity for this. In my experience as a teacher, most children light up and come alive near anything like this. They thirst for it.

With a view to creating opportunities for children to explore this perspective, mini workshops will be held in MHC over the coming months around the themes of nature, the seasons and spirituality.
